As I
mentioned in yesterday’s post, Charleston quickly stole my heart. We loved the European influence throughout
the city, the gas lamps on every house, and the charming porches. We learned on our carriage ride that the
typical Charleston home is referred to as a Single House. They are one room wide and multiple stories
tall, with the narrow side facing the street. A typical Single House has a
large porch on each level, allowing the breeze from the water to cool the
house.
It’s a
pretty well-known fact that I MUST find the best cupcake shop in every city we
travel to. To say I ADORE love sweets would be
an understatement. At Sugar Bakeshop we ordered
two flavors, lemon and chocolate on chocolate.
Both were delicious! The bakery was also charming on the inside, all the cupcakes were displayed on beautiful silver cake stands. Yes, it is most important for the cupcakes to taste good but if they come in a pretty package too. Well, I'm just over the moon!
We strolled
down a small alley off of King St. and found this beautiful cemetery outside of
the Unitarian Church. We were told that the church leaves the grounds of the cemetery
untouched, as they believe it is the closest thing to nature. I have read
reviews online that refer to this cemetery as spooky, but we found it to be
quite the opposite. It was really
beautiful. There were even a few butterflies fluttering around us as we walked along the paths.
Xoxo,
Whitney
